My Trip to the Ellijay Apple Festival

The Ellijay Apple Festival is the perfect family escape. There is much to do from young to old and there is something for everyone. There is entertainment, food, crafts and activities.

The Apple Festival is held annually the 2nd and 3rd weekends in October. It is held at the Ellijay Lions Club Fair Grounds 1729 South Main Street South of Ellijay, off Hwy. 5. Admission is $5 for adults and FREE for children 10 and under. Parking is provided free by the local boy scouts, but a donation of $2 is strongly suggested. Pets are not allowed, with the exception of guide dogs. Kennels are provided, but space is limited. Shuttle buses (school buses) run daily from various spots in Gilmer County.

Once inside the gate the possibilities are limitless. There is more delicious food than you could ever eat. My favorite is the trout smoked by a local group. And the gyros are usually to die for. The lines are generally long for all of the delicious food so get in line early.

Up and down the streets named after apples, you will find a wonderful selection of arts and crafts made by local artists and artists from all over the Southeastern United States. There are many local businesses there as well promoting their services.

Near the front of the fair grounds is a pavilion and stage. Sit a spell and enjoy some of the local talent. When you tire of sitting, head on to the back of the fairgrounds. There you will find a wild animal exhibit, a train ride, a rock climbing wall and an assortment of activities for the kids.

Plan to stay the whole weekend. You'll want to spend a whole day at the fairgrounds and spend a day on the square. There are more vendors there and lots of antique stores and downtown merchants. There is a fun run that takes place on the first Saturday and a parade the second Saturday.

Hope to see you there.
